How to recover editable text from a PDF

Try selecting a sentence in the PDF before choosing a converter. If selection and search work, the file may already contain the text you need. If the page is a photograph with no text layer, you need optical character recognition. If you want editable formatting, a DOCX converter is a separate choice.

Use PDF to Text for selectable text. It produces text rather than a Word file. For a scanned page, PDF to PNG can export a page image, then Image to Text can recognize the words in that image. OCR output can contain errors, especially in small print or text that follows a curve or table.

Rebuild the document in the right order

For a text-only memo, copy the extracted text into your editor and fix line breaks and headings. For a complex report, recover a representative page first. Tables and columns can produce a different reading order from the one you see. Check the header, a row from the middle, and the footnote before converting every page.

If the output needs to be DOCX, Adobe Acrobat’s PDF-to-Word page describes a dedicated conversion option. Check whether the file is allowed to be uploaded and whether you have the original editable document. The original generally gives you a clearer edit path than converting the PDF back.

Compare against the source before saving

Verify key terms, dates, and values. A single digit can change the meaning of a total or a reference. Keep a PDF copy as a visual source while making edits, and save the new file with a different name. If a page is protected against editing or copying, ask the document owner for a suitable copy.
