Questions people ask
What happens to a transparent background?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you pick (white by default). Keep the PNG if you need the cut-out, for example for a logo on a coloured site.
How much smaller will the file be?
For photos saved as PNG, JPG at 90% quality is often 70 to 90% smaller. For screenshots with flat colours and text, the saving is smaller and edges may show slight blur, so PNG can be the better choice there.
Which quality setting should I use?
85 to 92 is visually identical to the original for most photos. Go down to 70 to 80 when you must meet a strict size limit.
