Questions people ask
What are the formulas?
Each one starts at 5 ft (152.4 cm) and adds weight per inch above that. Devine: men 50 kg + 2.3 kg/in, women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg/in. Robinson: men 52 + 1.9, women 49 + 1.7. Miller: men 56.2 + 1.41, women 53.1 + 1.36. Hamwi: men 48 + 2.7, women 45.5 + 2.2.
Why do the formulas give different answers?
They were fitted to different data sets between 1964 and 1983 and none accounts for muscle or frame size. Treat the spread between them as a range, not one correct number.
How is the healthy BMI range worked out?
Weight = BMI × height² in metres. For 1.75 m, BMI 18.5 gives 56.7 kg and BMI 24.9 gives 76.3 kg. This is the World Health Organization range for adults.
