Questions people ask
Why does it stop at 3999?
Standard Roman numerals have no symbol above M (1000) and do not repeat a symbol more than three times, so MMMCMXCIX (3999) is the largest.
Why is 4 written IV and not IIII?
Subtractive notation puts a smaller symbol before a larger one to subtract it: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, CM = 900. Some clocks still show IIII.
Is there a Roman numeral for zero?
No. The Romans had no zero symbol.
