Why does text from a PDF have line breaks?

PDFs store text as positioned lines, not flowing paragraphs. When you copy it, each visual line usually ends with a hard break.

What does joining hyphenated words do?

When a word is split across lines like “exam-” and “ple”, it joins them back into “example”. It only joins when the next line starts with a lowercase letter.

How are paragraphs detected?

A blank line marks a new paragraph. Lines inside a paragraph are joined with a space or the separator you choose.
