About this tool

Slug Generator turns a page title into the readable part of a URL, such as “my-first-post”. It removes punctuation, converts accented letters to plain ones and can shorten long slugs at a word boundary.

Questions people ask

Should I use hyphens or underscores?

Use hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator but reads an underscore as part of the word, so “red-shoes” matches both words and “red_shoes” may not.

How are accented and special letters converted?

Accents are removed, so é becomes e and ñ becomes n. Letters like ß, æ and ø become ss, ae and o. The symbol & becomes “and”.

How long should a slug be?

Short is better. Three to five words is a good target, and most sites keep slugs under 60 to 75 characters.
