About this tool

Keyboard Tester shows a full keyboard on screen and lights up each key as you press it. Keys stay green once they have worked, so you can quickly spot a dead key, and it shows the key and code values developers need.

How to use Keyboard Tester

  1. Press each key on your keyboard.
  2. Watch keys turn green; a key that never lights up may be faulty.
  3. Press Reset to test again.

Questions people ask

Why does a key not light up?

Either the key is faulty or the system captures it first. Windows, Command, Fn, Print Screen and media keys are often handled by the operating system before the browser sees them.

What is the difference between key and code?

event.key is the character produced (it changes with layout and Shift). event.code is the physical key position, such as KeyA, which stays the same across layouts.

Does it work with non-US layouts?

Yes. The diagram shows a US layout, but keys are matched by physical position, so the same keys light up on UK, German or French keyboards.
