About this tool

Dead Pixel Test fills the screen with black, white, red, green, blue and other solid colours, one at a time. Faulty pixels stand out clearly against a single colour, which makes this a quick check for a new or second-hand screen.

How to use Dead Pixel Test

  1. Clean the screen and press Start full-screen test.
  2. Click or press the arrow keys to move through the colours.
  3. Look for dots that stay black or one colour, then press Esc to exit.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a dead and a stuck pixel?

A dead pixel stays black on every colour because it gets no power. A stuck pixel stays lit in one colour, such as red, green or blue.

Can a stuck pixel be fixed?

Sometimes. Rapidly flashing colours over the spot for 10–20 minutes, or gently pressing on it with a soft cloth, can free a stuck pixel. Dead pixels usually cannot be fixed.

How many dead pixels are acceptable?

It depends on the manufacturer. Many follow ISO 9241-307 classes, which allow a few faulty pixels on a Class II panel. Check the warranty terms for your model.
