GPA vs percentage grades: what you can calculate reliably

Work out your credit-weighted GPA and your course percentage separately, then use the scale your school or recipient specifies.

Open GPA Calculator

A GPA and a percentage grade answer different questions. A GPA often summarizes course grades using a scale and credit weights. A percentage in one course can come from the points you earned or from weighted assessment groups. There is no general conversion that works across every school.

Calculate each number from its own inputs

For a simple credit-weighted GPA example, suppose you earned a grade-point value of 4.0 in a three-credit course and 3.0 in a one-credit course. The total is 15 grade points across four credits, which gives 3.75. Averaging 4.0 and 3.0 without weights gives 3.5. That would treat the two courses as equally large.

Use GPA Calculator with the grading scale you need. If your school handles repeated courses, pass/fail marks, or transfer credits separately, use the official transcript method when it differs from the tool.

Check weighted percentages separately

Suppose a course counts assignments for 40% and an exam for 60%. An assignment score of 90% and an exam score of 75% produce 36 plus 45 percentage points, or 81%. You can model that with Grade Calculator. If a component is still ungraded, check whether the grade report excludes it or counts it as a zero. That can change what a projected result means.

What you need Use
One course’s weighted percentage The syllabus weights and assessment scores
A GPA across several courses Credit hours and your school’s grade-point scale
An application asking for a converted grade The conversion rules provided by the receiving organization

Prepare a result someone else can check

Keep the original scale alongside your estimate. If an application asks for the value from your transcript, enter that value in the format it requests. If it asks for a new scale, look for its official instructions or ask whether a conversion is required. A clear note like “3.75 on a 4.00 scale” conveys more information than a number stripped of its scale.
