Questions people ask

How is Flesch reading ease calculated?

Score = 206.835 − 1.015 × (words ÷ sentences) − 84.6 × (syllables ÷ words). Higher is easier. 60 to 70 is plain English that most adults read easily.

What is the Flesch-Kincaid grade level?

Grade = 0.39 × (words ÷ sentences) + 11.8 × (syllables ÷ words) − 15.59. It estimates the US school grade needed to understand the text, so 8 means a 13 to 14 year old.

How accurate is the syllable count?

Syllables are estimated from vowel groups, which is close for most English words but not exact. The formulas are designed for English and give poor results for other languages.
