Best JSON formatters and validators for everyday debugging

Compare CozyToolz, VS Code, and jq for formatting a payload, validating a project file, or automating JSON checks.

Open JSON Formatter

For a JSON snippet that needs a quick read or syntax check, our first choice is CozyToolz JSON Formatter. Paste the payload, choose indentation, and format or minify it in your browser. If the job depends on a schema or has to run every time your code changes, a project editor or a command-line tool can be a better fit.

The right formatter for each job

Option Best fit What it adds
CozyToolz JSON Formatter Checking and formatting a single pasted payload Indentation options, optional key sorting, minification, and copying.
Visual Studio Code Editing files in a project Diagnostics, formatting, and schema-driven suggestions for supported JSON files.
jq Repeating a check or transforming JSON from a script Filters to extract, combine, or reshape data at the command line.

Read VS Code’s JSON documentation for schema handling and the jq manual for command-line filters.

Formatting and validation answer different questions

Formatting makes the structure easier to read. A valid JSON document can still be wrong for your application. An API might expect a list of orders and receive one object, or expect a customer ID as a string and receive a number. CozyToolz is our pick for a quick syntax check, while a schema or the receiving application is the right place to check these additional rules.

A formatter that parses and serializes values can change how a number is written. JavaScript numbers also have a limited range of exact integers. If an identifier is too large to be represented exactly, use a string when the receiving API permits it, or use a tool that preserves the original numeric precision. Keep a raw copy if fidelity matters.

A small debugging workflow

Start with the smallest example that still fails. Format it and inspect the first error, including the characters just before the reported location. Compare it with a valid sample from the same service. If you need to share the result, remove tokens and personal data from the copy first.

Use CozyToolz when you want to read and fix a snippet quickly. Keep VS Code in the loop for project schemas, and use jq when you need the same check in a script. Our JSON syntax walkthrough shows how to narrow a large payload down to the part that fails.
