About this tool

Random Team Generator shuffles a list of people and deals them into teams, like dealing cards. Team sizes never differ by more than one, which makes it quick and fair for classrooms, sports and workshops.

How to use Random Team Generator

  1. Paste names, one per line or separated by commas.
  2. Choose a number of teams or people per team.
  3. Press Make teams and copy the result.

Questions people ask

How are the teams kept even?

Names are shuffled, then dealt to each team in turn. With 13 people and 3 teams you get teams of 5, 4 and 4.

Is the split really random?

Yes. The list is shuffled with the Fisher–Yates method using the browser’s secure random generator, so every arrangement is equally likely.

How is the captain chosen?

The first person dealt to each team after shuffling is the captain, so it is random too.
