About this tool
A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of data. Use this tool to create SHA hashes of text, or to check that a downloaded file matches the checksum the publisher lists. Files are hashed locally.
How to use Hash Generator
- Type text or choose a file.
- Hashes for every algorithm appear automatically.
- Copy the one you need, or paste a checksum to compare.
Questions people ask
Which hash should I use?
SHA-256 is the most common choice today. SHA-1 is outdated for security but still used for some checksums.
Can a hash be reversed?
No. Hashes are one-way. The same input always gives the same hash, but you cannot get the input back.
Why is MD5 not listed?
MD5 is broken for security use and browsers do not include it in their crypto engine. Use SHA-256 instead.
